Location
Liezen is a town with 8245 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in the Styrian Enns Valley and the seat of the district administration of the Liezen district, the largest district in Austria in terms of area.
An important economic factor for the town was its location on the Pyhrn Pass and the iron ore mining on the Salberg, which has been documented since the 13th century. The iron ore deposits visible above Liezen on the Rote Wand led to the creation of a dragon legend, which later became the subject of the town's coat of arms.
