Location Hieflau is part of the Styrian municipality of Landl (Liezen district) and was a separate municipality with 730 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014) in the district of Leoben until the end of 2014. As part of the municipal reform in Styria, it has also been merged with the former Palfau and Gams bei Hieflau as part of the municipality of Landl since 2015, meaning that Hieflau is now also located in the district of Liezen.
The village is located at the eastern end of the Gesäuse at the mouth of the Erzbach stream into the Enns. The village lies at an altitude of 503 m above sea level.
Not far from the village is the Wassermannsloch, whose cave system has been surveyed over a length of more than 1000 meters.
